RETAIL ARCADE DESIGN
(2018)
BRIEF:
A redesign of the Blocksidge Building retail arcade on Ann Street aims to activate the arcade, or spaces/zones within the arcade, using signage, technology, architecture and design so that it encourages more pedestrian traffic to boost trade for our tenants.

The new design should continue to act as a public thoroughfare to Adelaide street with a solution that aligns with the Blocksidge family values/brand and is realised through rigorous contextual analysis of the current situation.
The final outcome should improve wayfinding, site lines and increase potential for leasing opportunities.

RESPONSE:
Project Ambition
"One should always endeavour to to leave a place better than one found it. It is far more important to keep an honest name, then make a quick quid." - George Henry Blocksidge

Proposal
An inner-city retail arcade destination that strives to mainstream the concepts of sustainable retail + lifestyles practices. The arcade will be home to responsible fashion and health + beauty retailers who will provide consumer goods produced locally and ethically. An organic grocer, a specialty bakery and bulk naked foods store align with toxin free - zero waste initiatives.

The Design
A reimagining of the traditional arcade being a walkway enclosed by a succession of arches became the primary concept for the design. Successive timber fins with undulating voids, carve out the retail spaces and the arcade walkway.
