MICRO-HOTEL - PART B
(2017)
BRIEF:
Part B of the Micro-Hotel design involves designing the rest of the Micro-Hotel outside of the context of the Hotel Rooms (Part A).
This will include working on the resolution and developed design of the lobby, kiosk and commercial facilities attached to the Micro Hotel in detail. You will also rationalise your initial concept space planning if required, to provide a developed design solution for the entire Micro Hotel project.
RESPONSE:
The Lady Cilento Family Hospice Hotel is located in the heart of Southbank and provides respite for incredibly ill child patients and their families. The micro-hotel aims to capture the spatial qualities of Southbank and bring the diverse offerings for children into the interior, for those who may not be well enough to venture outside or simply those just in need of quality family time outside of a hospital room.
The hotel design was inspired by the light qualities produced by the Southbank Grand Arbor walkway and the dappled light caused by the wave of vibrant bougainvillea. Colourful and dappled light inundates the space throughout all time of the day with a variety of semi porous perspex tiles dangling on the exterior glazing of the rooms and the skylight above the accessible playground.
Southbank is a micro-city in itself offering performance, entertainment, art, history, playgrounds and so much more for families. The Hospice Hotel engages with the idea of creating it’s own micro-city right in the middle of this social and cultural Hub.
A creative therapy garden is situated centrally and allows the children to engage in art and other creative work underneath the tree sculpture illuminated centrally by fair lighting. A designated play space with accessible play equipment designed for limited mobility allows all visitor’s to participate. A small water play space including a small ground feature fountain recreates the essence of the neighbouring water-parks and extenuates a sense of Southbank through this audible association to place.
The palette was derived by taking queues of Southbank flora such a the bougainvillea, the colour scheme of existing playground and also the palette from the Lady Cilento Hospital to immediately create a sense of familiarity for long term patients who may feel initially displaced.
In addition to the renovation of the old Riverside Restaurant for the Hospice Hotel, an opportunity was seen to create two retail spaces that could engage the public and also fund the Hospice Hotel ongoing costs. A small Space in the Hotel Lobby was large enough to accommodate a small Cancer Council Retail Store. Being directly adjacent to the Kodak beach, it was an excellent opportunity to promote Sun Safety and sell hats and sunscreen to visitors.
An Outdoor rooftop cinema specifically designed to accommodate people of all mobility levels will not only benefit the patients of the Hospice, but also the greater community. What separates this cinema from others is not only the amazing location but the unique recessed netted hammock seating that allows everybody to lie in the same position no matter physical ability and the retracting cinema screen where the projected image is display on the roof. The floor is especially designed with ramps and a gradient for comfortable viewing of the feature and city.
